Week 4 Part 1

Website 1: http://gatesnfences.com/

As soon as I went to the website for Gates n Fences, I audibly said "ew". It was my very first reaction simply to the layout and aesthetic of the website. I definitely think this could be a big problem for potential customers, as people want to work with businesses that have easy-to-navigate websites so they can find what they are looking for as quickly and easily as possible. The aesthetic and design is the first potential problem for visitors, but the amount of information, photos, words and colors on the page are so overwhelming that it takes you a minutes to even comprehend what you are looking at. Again, people want fast and effective. When you go onto this site, with all the words and information given right away, it confuses the user and makes the process of purchasing a product or using a service much more time costly.  The menu on the left hand side of the website is atrocious. Instead of having a simple drop down menu, with all the products located in categories or separated into their own pages, it is hard on the eyes and again, makes finding what you are looking for much harder than it needs to be.

The first thing I would do to improve this website is change the layout and design structure. I would opt for a very simple layout, with one eye-catching photograph or maybe a large photo slide of nice pictures of gates or fences. I would also have a simple phrase or sentence that attracts the customers and describes the services or products that the business offers, for example: "Gates and Fences for Your Home and Security" or something along the lines of that. The phrase they have on their site is incredibly long and unnecessary. I would also maybe have some testimonials on the home page of satisfied customers, a very brief description of the company and its services, a phone number and address, and any social media links the company uses. Of course I would also change the menu and have a simple drop down menu with all of the products categorized.

An example of a similar company with a website I find appealing is: https://bit.ly/2m4VkNY

Website 2: http://www.roverp6cars.com/

This website incited a similar reaction as the previous one did. Again, with this site, there is so much going on immediately that you have no idea where to look. There are low quality photos, moving banners, horrible colors and fonts that have zero aesthetic. The menu of the site is huge, way too long and everything on the site feels cramped and crowded. I don't think they could fit another word or photo on this site if they tried. It is very difficult to navigate and find what you are looking for, the aesthetic and atrocious and not easy on the eyes, and the structure is outdated, crowded, and confusing.

The first thing I would do to improve this site would be to again, change the layout, opt for a much simpler one, and get rid of all the photos and have only a few, much higher quality ones. I would choose a few colors for the design, bette fonts, and create a drop down menu with the items all categorized. Like the previous website, I would have testimonials, a short introduction, contact information, and some nice photos.

An example of a similar company with a website I find appealing is: https://www.audisandiego.com/audi-service-auto-repairs-parts-san-diego-ca.htm

Website 3:https://www.nps.gov/index.htm

I may be biased as I do enjoy spending my time camping and exploring in the National Parks of this country, but the NPS website is very appealing to me. For one, it is simple. The layout is clean, there isn't a whole bunch of words and images immediately blasting you in the face. I would probably change the head photograph to something more iconic of the National Parks though, like a photo of half dome (cliche I know) or the Grand Canyon or something, but other than that, I think the NPS did a great job with its site. It is easy to navigate and find what you are looking for, the drop down menu is clearly categorized for simplicity and ease. They have all of their social media links at the bottom of the page, easily findable. The National Parks system is a very large system with tons of parks, and I think they did a great job at keeping the site simple and not overwhelming, making it easy to find information and whatever National Park you are looking for.

Website 4: https://www.toyota.com/

Again, I may be biased here as I drive a Toyota, but Toyota's website seems to have it all. The slide screen on the home page with the latest models is a great marketing tool, very appealing to the eye and overall matches the brand's aesthetic/"look". The layout of the site is similar to the NPS's site, with the menu at the top, although Toyota's has more of a horizontal menu with some drop-down options. Everything is clear and organized, easy to navigate, appealing to the eye, and still has all the information you need right there in front of you, without being overwhelming or confusing.
