Week 5 Post 1

I always thought of Subway as the sandwich chain that tried to come off as healthy, fresh, and convenient. Prior to checking out their website, I assumed there would be a lot of photos of fresh ingredients, words like "fresh" and "healthy". I mean, we all remember Jared the Subway guy right? He used to claim he lost tons of weight and felt better after eating Subway. Well, we shouldn't get into his details too much, but that's what I always thought of Subway as: the healthy-ish sandwich chain. Their website definitely doesn't appear to target people who are particularly into health. It seems to be targeting people who are simply looking for tasty, easy sandwiches. It seems like a pretty basic target market. Subway can be for anybody - kids, athletes, people who just want a good sandwich (and who doesnt't?). So their target market isn't very specific, at least from the evidence I gathered. I wouldn't really expect a granola vegan type to be eating Subway by any means, but I wouldn't say they wouldn't either.

Hungry Bear's site comes off more of a local, mom and pop type place, that targets people looking for more of a gourmet sandwich. Someone going to Subway is someone who's on their work break, a quick stop on a road trip, a school lunch visit, etc. Someone going to Hungry Bear's is either a usual customer, someone looking to have a sit-down lunch, maybe even a foodie trying to find a really good sandwich nearby.

Both Subway and Hungry Bear do promote freshness, quality ingredients, and deliciousness, as one would expect. But Subway is a chain, and Hungry Bear is not, so there are obviously going to be slight differences. Subway of course does have the nutrition info, even though it isn't screaming at you that their sandwiches are the healthiest, there is still the underlying suggestion that you can still eat at Subway even if you're on a diet or trying to lose weight. Hungry Bear's is not about to start promoting weight loss anytime soon. Their sandwiches do appear to be high quality, but definitely not a weight watcher's choice.
